A finger points to the moon. Having seen reality as it is,there is neither moon nor finger. We can say “God,” we can say “dhamma,” we can say Source, Creator, Creation—but if we are trapped in the symbol, the word, the sound, we will never enter into relationship with what the symbol points to.

Since Constantine, Christianity has repeatedly claimed a legitimate right to do violence to its members [and others] to protect its interests and conserve its supremacy. It has sought far-reaching and sometimes almost limitless control over the behavior and minds of its subjects. At times, it has behaved like a totalitarian power, suppressing dissent and claiming divine and absolute authority, capable of absolute corruption. – Brian McLaren, Meditations, The Center for Action and Contemplation.

It’s 4 a.m. and Nasruddin leaves the tavern
and walks the town aimlessly.
A policeman stops him.
‘Why are you out wandering the streets
in the middle of the night?’
“Sir,” replies Nasruddin,
“if I knew the answer to that question,
I would have been home hours ago.” ” – Rumi

Many Have I
Many have I seen, met, living
lives on nearby streetcorners,
supermarkets, and later
in streets pushing stolen carts
filled with scraps of what
otherwise would be buried
in the dung infested heaps
on the edge of town, The stuff
in the back yard of schools,
the surgeon's waiting rooms.
We are the authors of this,
a disaster novel.
It is difficult to forgive the greed
that makes this possibly possible.
Surely they just don't and if they did
I know they indeed would do better,
because like their victims, struggling
in their own way to be, rather than,
do hypnotically what
they now must. Many are they
who now protest the lost,
the erased souls they may not themselves
believe – and of these who do protest
many have been and are broken.
This I know,
yet, this remains a description
not an excuse
and applies as well
to you, for example,
and myself without exception.

Don't Hesitate
If you suddently and unexpectedly feel joy,
don't hesitate . . .
It could be anything,
but likely
you notice it in the instant
when love begins.
Anyway, whatever it is,
don't be afraid of its plenty.
Joy is not made to be a crumb.
