Wash Day

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it. ― Omar Khayyám

after Stephen Dunn

...many a false step

has been made by standing still.

...So much that’s worthy occurs

by what seems accidental.

The great wisdom tradition books

couldn’t have been written by people

who thought they were writing

a great book.

Likely they weren't writing at all

but speaking with someone

who struggled to remember

and wrote it down as best they recalled

sitting in some shelter

from a flood-like pouring rain

or a winter storm that froze

everything in place for days.
