Earth Day 2
Today's mailbox was full of significant reminders...
Earth Day was first observed in 1970. Its foundational roots go back to the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring.
And on this date in 1889 The first Oklahoma Land Rush began in violation of numerous treaties signed by the authority of the United States with many Indigenous tribes. From 1778 to 1871, the United States signed some 368 treaties with various Indigenous people across the North American continent, many, if not most, still remain while ignoring our pledge to honor the land.
Enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant was born on this date Königsberg, Prussia (1724). Fittingly for this day, Kant became famous for his single moral obligation, the "Categorical Imperative": that we should judge our actions by whether or not we would want everyone else to act the same way.
Poet Louise Glück is 79 years old today, born in New York City in 1943. She was named Poet Laureate of the United States in 2003.
