Freedom

Reminders in this morning's Cinco de Mayo mailbox…

807 years ago today (1215) a group of angry English barons renounced loyalty to King John leading to what we now call the Magna Carta. Remaining from that document (in addition to its inherited spirit) is our legally binding commitment to a fair trial before the law as judged by our peers.

Today is the 209th anniversary of philosopher Søren Kierkegaard's, birth (Copenhagen, 1813), whose writings confirm those notions of “fair” and “peer” are quite subjective even in the law.

And journalist Nellie Bly (born Elizabeth Jane Cochran) was born today in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (1864), who documented much subjective oppression of marginalized peoples, which, sadly continues.
