In 1908 what has come to be called the "Tunguska event" occurred – a mysterious explosion over central Siberia flattened trees over an 800-square-mile area. Scientists think the event was caused by the explosion of a meteor.

President Lincoln granted the Yosemite Valley to California on this date in 1864, It was the first time the federal government set aside land specifically for preservation and recreational use.

And, today in 1914 Mahatma Gandhi was arrested for the first time after campaigning for Indian rights in South Africa.

Yesterday, in 1613, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre burned to the ground. Rebuilt twice in the 1600's, and finally, a complete restoration reopened it in 1997 on the original grounds. And, yesterday marked the 122nd anniversary of the birth in 1900 of French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in Lyon, France. He gifted us with “The Little Prince.”
