War…what is it good for?

In the mailbox this first Monday in hotter’n blazes 2022 July…

Today is the 167th anniversary of the first edition publication of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.

Notable births celebrated today include: Neil Simon, Tracy Letts, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

And lest we forget, today is “the 4th of July” when we are supposed to celebrate the formal signing 246 years ago of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. There are thousands of our citizens who've never read it, don't care to read it, and have no idea of its value or importance, but love to blow up stuff, shoot guns, and scare dogs.

Yesterday was the 159th anniversary of the last day of the battle of Gettysburg that marked the turning point in our Civil War, but did not put an end to it.

This is the field where the battle did not happen … people celebrate it by forgetting its name – from At the Un-National Monument along the Canadian Border by William Stafford.
