Maria Callas died on this date in Paris at age 53. The American-born Greek operatic soprano revived classical coloratura roles in the mid-20th century with her lyrical and dramatic versatility. She remains among the pantheon of unmatchable voices, poise, elegance and beauty gifted to us as evidenced by this historic recording of “Vissi d'arte” from Act II of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca live at the Palais Garnier on the 19th of December 1958. It marked the soprano's debut at the Paris Opera, a major social event for Parisians and for which Callas donned her most elegant couture and a million dollars' worth of jewelry.
