Caught in the act...

In the mailbox this Saturday morning ahead of another very hot day...

Just discovered that many of my prior posts’ anniversary dates are in error … the fix is in from here on out. So here we go:

In 1945, The United States detonated the first atomic bomb in a test at Alamogordo, N. M.

J. D. Salinger's "Catcher in Rye" was published today in 1951 by Little Brown and Company.

"The Who" began their 1st full US tour today in1967, appearing at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, opening for Herman's Hermits. “The Who” have sold more than 100 million albums … and … they’re still touring. They’ll be in LA in November this year.

Apollo 11 launched today in 1969, carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Four days later, on July 20th, Aldrin and Armstrong became the first beings (as far as we know, of course) to walk on the moon. Collins remained aboard the lunar module.

Speaking of walking on the moon…

"The Three Tenors" – Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, perhaps classical music’s most historic trio – performed in Los Angeles tonight in 1994. Their first concert had been nine days earlier on July 7th in Rome. Zubin Mehta conducted the orchestras of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. The link above is to the Rome concert performance by Pavarotti of “Nessun Dorma.” If you’ve never heard or witnessed this, I offer it to you so that you will never be the same afterward.
