The Louvre opened as a public museum in Paris, today. in 1793.

Today is the 503rd anniversary in 1519 that the explorer Ferdinand Magellan set sail in an attempt to better Columbus. He made it across the Atlantic and the Pacific as far as the Philippines where he was killed in a local tribal war. The voyage was successfully completed by the Basque navigator Juan Sebastián del Cano. One ship and 18 men – of the original 270 men on five ships – made it back to Spain almost three years to the date (September 8, 1522) having completed the first circumnavigation of the world.
