Flying over the Cukoo's nest . . .

Thursday, September 17, 2026. It's Thor's day . . . Four more 100º days are in the forecasts for GreenCountry and TulseyTown. Peace can be a trap, compassion a performance, and joy a mask. These are not wrong, but when we cling to them, they become stagnant. A flower can’t always bloom. It needs time to rest, to wilt, and to go underground. Boredom, restlessness, and pain are not mistakes. They’re movement. “Doing nothing” disrupts holding on. We are already enough. Take five minutes to do-no-thing.

Today is the 7th anniversary of Heather Cox Richardson's first Letter From An American.

It was on this day in 1849 that Harriet Tubman escaped from the Southern plantation where she was enslaved and later led other enslaved people to freedom in the North along the route of the Underground Railroad.

It’s the anniversary in1862 of the Civil War Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American military history.

The novelist Ken Kesey was born on this day in 1935 La Junta, Colorado.

And, today is the birthdate of the medical doctor, poet, novelist, essayist, and playwright, William Carlos Williams, born in 1883 Rutherford, New Jersey.

Fool's Song

I tried to put a bird in a cage.
O fool that I am!
For the bird was Truth.
Sing merrily, Truth: I tried to put
Truth in a cage!

– William Carlos Williams “The Fool’s Song,” first published in his collection The Tempers. London: Elkin Mathews, 1913. The poem is now in the public domain.
