If ever there was a good reason for you to attend a “No Kings” demonstration near you today, Heather Cox Richardson's summary should provide it. In her Letters From An American, posted for today.

Today is the birthdate of St. Teresa of Ávila, in 1515 Avila, Spain. Mirabai Starr has published a superb translation of Teresa's writing. Definitely a worthy read.

It's also the birthdate of Nelson Algren. The novelist of the down and out was born in 1909 Detroit, and grew up in Chicago’s immigrant neighborhoods.

Poet, novelist, and short-story writer Russell Banks was born today in 1940 Newton, Massachusetts. Not alone among novelists, several of Banks' works have been adapted to film. My fave: “The Sweet Hereafter.” Directed by the master filmmaker Atom Egoyan, you can watch it on Youtube.

Novelist Lauren Weisberger (The Devil Wears Prada) is 48 today. She was born in 1977 Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Lady Gaga makes her 39th turn around the sun today as well. The singer/sonwriter is one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People . She was born in 1986, New York City

Reba McEntire is 71 born in 1955, McAlester, Oklahoma, about 2 hours drive from my front porch in TulseyTown.

And, Paul Whiteman was born today in 1890, Denver, Colorado. The American bandleader was called the “King of Jazz,” credited with introducing the style to American musical audiences in the 1920's. He commissioned Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite.
